Spreading ideas & startups

If a picture is worth a thousand words,
then the picture say more about you
than you would ever dare to say.

I received this morning this link on my video/visual blog.

I agree with the left-hand side of the picture, but I would have used something else for the second.

Anyway, the advertisement concept is nice, albeit false.

As I said to startups that I supported, e-mailing your ideas is not the best way to ensure that reality will never meet your dreams about the ideas.

More often than not, it would look like that to you- until you will see it coming back, from another source :-)

Copyright, Patent, Trademark are a defense for your intellectual property rights only if you have the money to use those devices.

Otherwise, the best way to protect yourself is to start building on those ideas: e.g. register with WGA (Writers Guild of America) and register your domain with one page, before you start sending around documents.

For a total cost of around 30 USD- taxes included; the concept, format, script, etc registration covers for 5 years, the domain is for one year, but usually is between 9 and 15 USD per year (depending where you go).

There are some “plagiarism check” engines around (do your own search, and use the one that better fit your purposes), so you will not need a big buck lawyer or a publisher to do a quick check.

Moreover- this will also help you recognize that, quite often, “smart ideas” that you have while reading newspapers and sipping your first coffee of the day probably could “spark” in some other mind :-)

If you share the same culture, path, sensibilities, interests- chances are that you could have the same reaction to some news.

And checking around, sometimes, will save you, the potential startup creator, from either wasting money with assorted consultants, or spending all your spare time in your basement working on your wonderful new idea…

…just to discover that it has been out there for a long time, and your idea is actually a step back, not a step forward.

So, before reinventing the stone wheel, check if it is already around ;-)

Why the stone wheel? Because there is and there will be always space for a different type of wheel- but do you want to spend time and money to convince people or create a market for a stone wheel?
