Everyday politics :)

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Aristotle said that, by nature, we are all political animals.

When I wrote in the title “everyday politics” I was not thinking about “professional” politics.

I was simply stating: with the new technologies, that disrupt the usual communication organizations and control, everybody can do a political action. Everyday.

Read below to see how to begin now. Without a budget. Just a brain and a keyboard, and some experience to share.

Business planning from scratch: a case study

Monday, July 20th, 2009

As promised in “Sharing intellectual property“, this is a the first publication.

This example is not a theoretical example: it is material from a real project- but, of course, some information is not available online.

I used to share this information with specific startups, but the interesting part is not producing the final spreadsheets (what I call “number crunching”).

It is the process that takes you from the idea up to having a completed business plan. And you will find here both the process the material to apply it to your own new activity.

Sharing intellectual property

Friday, July 17th, 2009

This article is to announce a new step in my online intellectual property sharing.

To help you kick-start your own activities, and save some time.

For free.

The idea? Avoiding re-inventing the wheel.

The approach? Until 2008, I shared my documents only within my network.

The first documents? Of course, on the Moon Landing Anniversary :D

With this blog, I consider my potential network members whoever bothers to stop by and read.

If you read my blog, you know that I am quite skeptical about all the obsession on IPR- Intellectual Property Rights :)

(dis)integrating corporate communication

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Do you know what is outsourcing? If not, have a look on wikipedia.

But if you do: when and how do you define what to outsource?

You can search on this blog, and you will find plenty of articles where I discussed various issues related to downsizing and outsourcing, both on the business and corporate culture side.

this article is focused on something else, that is visible in my CV, but even more in my pre-banking (i.e. pre-1987) and non-profit activities.

If you have no time: go for the conclusions :)

Managing change across time

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

If you read once in a while this chaotic website of mine, you know that I wrote here and there about change management.

I would like to share here some experience from my activities, and why I believe that adopting a common framework might be sub-optimal, but a smart allocation of resources.

To summarize:

  1. change is a constant (”panta rei”)
  2. change is made of “here and now” activities, and their antecedents and consequences
  3. if you can, do not re-invent the wheel- use an existing one…
  4. …and see how to make it fit in your environment
  5. and drop that “not invented here” attitude: you are wasting resources
  6. last but not least: ask yourself- who will keep the memory of the choices made

Building a cross-media presence

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Over the last few years you heard often the word “format”, when referring to TV, movies (usually along with the word “franchise”).

This article will try to use two examples that I created, to show different approaches to a cross-media format for the XXI century- or: building a cross-media presence.

One that is not focused on converting the public into a passive viewer.

After the May 2009 experiment, the daily delivery of the draft script of a series called GMN2009 (”Genome, Mind Mapping, Neural Networks”), a new step.

As part of my experiments in communication, I created a format 10-4-20: The Game Language (WGA Registered 1366431).

Both formats are built to be cross-media, and as a living experiment, encompassing both the usual format purpose (live game), and also potential online, gaming, and other uses.

The concept? To give a showcase on how a cross-media for the XXI century can be created not only to convert each TV viewer into a dumb idiot, but also to spur innovation and creativity.

The main section of this article is the Examples: 10-4-20- a gaming format – details.
But I suggest that you read also at least the introduction What is a format? What is a franchise? And a YouTube promo? if you do not have experience with cultural change and format creation.

If you are just interested in applying the concepts, read the introduction and Next steps: sharing the process, where I explain how I am currently thinking to apply the guidelines set in my articles Democratic technology access and A virtual news agency

A virtual news agency

Monday, July 6th, 2009

If you were to visit a news organization, say, in late 1970s, you would have seen a room with the constant chattering of teletype machines.

Every once in a while, a line would appear with a catchy title, followed by few more lines.

I remember that it was called “strillo d’agenzia” in Italian (I was but a kid, tagging along with my father).

Recently, I have been supporting few pro-bono startups.

In this short post, I would like to focus on a simple issue: layering your online information, taking a page from 1970s news agencies and organizations.

Using safely outsourcing and SaaS

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Are you interested or involved in decisions about using outsourcing and web-based applications?

Then, business-oriented (i.e. non technical) post is for you.

How to define a contractual minimal level of security, with some examples.

Let me explain: not simply outsourcing, but also SasS (Software as a service).

If you do not understand what I mean… it is like GoogleDocs- the idea that you do not install software on your machine, and instead use a website to both give you the software and keep your documents.

A wonderful concept.

And I totally subscribe to it.

But…
