Outsourcing and avatars

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Today is Friday, so I will publish an article that has been sitting on my hard disk for some time.

It is about the future of outsourcing, now that our communication technology allows moderately reliable long-distance, high-speed communication worldwide.

My inspiration? Well, my own past experiences as a consultant, shuttled around sometimes to sit idle and wait, and activities in outsourcing and for outsourcing companies, plus experiments over the last few years in using remote tools (Skype and others) to deliver management consulting and startup support services.

And, for the “avatar” part, a posting on Facebook by IEEE, announcing an article to be published in the association’s official magazine, Spectrum, on physical avatars.

Business planning from scratch: a case study

Monday, July 20th, 2009

As promised in “Sharing intellectual property“, this is a the first publication.

This example is not a theoretical example: it is material from a real project- but, of course, some information is not available online.

I used to share this information with specific startups, but the interesting part is not producing the final spreadsheets (what I call “number crunching”).

It is the process that takes you from the idea up to having a completed business plan. And you will find here both the process the material to apply it to your own new activity.

(dis)integrating corporate communication

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Do you know what is outsourcing? If not, have a look on wikipedia.

But if you do: when and how do you define what to outsource?

You can search on this blog, and you will find plenty of articles where I discussed various issues related to downsizing and outsourcing, both on the business and corporate culture side.

this article is focused on something else, that is visible in my CV, but even more in my pre-banking (i.e. pre-1987) and non-profit activities.

If you have no time: go for the conclusions :)

Managing change across time

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

If you read once in a while this chaotic website of mine, you know that I wrote here and there about change management.

I would like to share here some experience from my activities, and why I believe that adopting a common framework might be sub-optimal, but a smart allocation of resources.

To summarize:

  1. change is a constant (”panta rei”)
  2. change is made of “here and now” activities, and their antecedents and consequences
  3. if you can, do not re-invent the wheel- use an existing one…
  4. …and see how to make it fit in your environment
  5. and drop that “not invented here” attitude: you are wasting resources
  6. last but not least: ask yourself- who will keep the memory of the choices made

Using safely outsourcing and SaaS

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Are you interested or involved in decisions about using outsourcing and web-based applications?

Then, business-oriented (i.e. non technical) post is for you.

How to define a contractual minimal level of security, with some examples.

Let me explain: not simply outsourcing, but also SasS (Software as a service).

If you do not understand what I mean… it is like GoogleDocs- the idea that you do not install software on your machine, and instead use a website to both give you the software and keep your documents.

A wonderful concept.

And I totally subscribe to it.

But…
