Quantitative vs Qualitative, Visual vs Verbal: false dichotomies

It is quite funny how we got used to charts, statistics, and discussions about different perspectives.

But, despite all our computers, technologies, and so on… we keep getting the usual white/black alternatives, or “dichotomies”.

This short articles is about something that I kept doing often to convert complexity into something we are all used to: getting a 0 to 10, or 0 to 5, or F to A.

The concept is simple: our brain is inherently multi-dimensional.

We are able to see, perceive, think in shades- and to switch from visual to verbal if and when needed.

But when we move from what is personal to what is abstract (our work, in most cases, or news), we seemingly accept at face value boundaries that do not exist- false dichotomies.

Pattern-based visual decision making

I think that Edison said: innovation is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.

As over the next two years it is currently planned that I will not have time to do my usual consulting activities, beside for some activity online, mainly pro bono, I started over the last few weeks to share some material that I had planned to use in my services or with my partners.

This short preamble will be in each article.

If you manage to turn something to a practical use- good luck: you will have to do the 99% missing!

And now, we can move to today’s article.

XXI century managers who started using mobiles over the last few years, and are now just kids, will probably better equipped to interact with a visual approach.

A picture is worth 1000 words.

Actually, a picture can be used as an outline to understand more than 1000 words.

I have no artistic pretense- but I think visually.

As explained in the the presentation, the abstract is the first step, followed by this map, and then, the article.

Read the abstract if you want to think about your own position on the subject. Read the map if you want to just see what are my arguments. And read the article if you want to read my position and some experience-based ideas and suggestions.
